Gulmarg in Winter vs Summer — What Your Driver Wants You to Know
"I have driven the Srinagar–Gulmarg route more times than I can count — in January snow so deep the road disappears, and in June when the meadows are so green tourists stop me mid-route to take photos. Both seasons are real. Both are worth it. But they are completely different experiences and most tourists don't know which one they are actually booking for."
1. Quick Comparison — Winter vs Summer at a Glance
Winter
December — March
Summer
May — June
One thing both seasons share: the taxi fare from Srinagar to Gulmarg stays the same year-round — ₹2,500 for a sedan and ₹3,800 for an Innova Crysta, one-way. The only additional cost in winter is a snow jeep from Tangmarg if the road is blocked (more on that below).
2. Gulmarg in Winter — December to March
Winter is when Gulmarg transforms completely. The meadow that was green in June is now buried under several feet of snow. The wooden buildings, the pine trees, the Gondola pylons — everything is white. For many tourists, this is the Kashmir they came to see.
December — the first heavy snow
December brings the first significant snowfall, usually by the first or second week. Temperatures drop to single digits at night and hover between 2°C and 8°C during the day. This is when the ski resort opens and when the town fills up with families from Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad who want to show their children snow for the first time. It is the busiest month after January.
Driver's note: In December, the road from Tangmarg to Gulmarg is usually still passable by private vehicle. Book your holiday before the 15th of December if you want to drive all the way up. After heavy snowfall, the road sometimes closes to private vehicles and snow jeeps from Tangmarg are the only option.
January–February — peak snow season
This is when Gulmarg is at its most dramatic. Snow depth at the town level can reach 4–6 feet by mid-January, and the upper slopes near Afarwat Peak (Phase 2 Gondola) can have 8–10 feet of fresh powder. For skiers, this is the best time in India. For non-skiers, it is still spectacular — sledging, snowball fights, pony rides on snow, and the sheer experience of being in a white landscape at 2,650 metres.
The road from Tangmarg (13 km below Gulmarg) to the town is frequently closed to private vehicles in January and February after heavy falls. In this case, your Holiday Formula taxi drops you at Tangmarg and local snow jeeps — 4WD vehicles operated by a union — complete the final stretch. This costs approximately ₹500–₹800 per jeep.
March — the tail of winter
By March, snowfall becomes less frequent and some melting begins on the lower slopes. This is one of the best times for budget travellers — the landscape is still very snowy, crowds are lower than January, and hotel prices drop. The road to Gulmarg usually becomes passable by private vehicle again by mid-March.
Winter activities at Gulmarg: Skiing & snowboarding (ski hire available at the resort), Gondola Phase 1 & 2 (book online in advance), sledging (available near the market), pony rides on snow, snowman-building, photography of the valley covered in snow, and the Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve (can be walked in snowshoes).
3. Gulmarg in Summer — May to June
The snow melts, the grass grows back, and Gulmarg becomes one of the most beautifully green places in India. The "Meadow of Flowers" name starts making sense in May when wildflowers — including the famous Gulmarg tulips and alpine flowers — bloom across the slopes.
May — the green awakening
Snow has largely retreated to the upper slopes and the Gondola Phase 2 area. The lower meadow is green and walkable. Temperatures are mild — 12°C to 18°C during the day — making it perfect for long walks and pony rides without needing heavy clothing. The road from Tangmarg is clear and your private taxi drives all the way to the Gulmarg market.
June — peak summer
June is the busiest summer month. Schools are out across India and families flood into Kashmir. Gulmarg gets very crowded — gondola queues can be 2–3 hours long on peak days. The flip side is that the landscape is at its most lush, the air is clean and cool, and the views from Phase 2 Gondola (if weather permits) across the Himalayas are extraordinary.
Driver's tip for June: Leave Srinagar no later than 6:30am to reach Gulmarg before the gondola queues build. I often drop families at 8am and they get on the gondola by 8:30am — by 10:30am the queue is 45 minutes long. The same gondola, the same view, 90 minutes earlier makes a huge difference.
July to August — monsoon months
I am honest with tourists about July and August: this is not Gulmarg's best season. The monsoon brings cloud cover, rain, and mist that can obscure the mountain views entirely for days. The gondola sometimes closes for weather. The meadows are still green but the experience is hit-and-miss depending on the day's weather. If you must visit in July–August, plan a flexible itinerary and do not book Gulmarg as a must-see day trip — treat it as weather-dependent.
4. The Hidden Best Times — April and September–October
Most tourists do not know about these windows, but experienced Kashmir drivers and repeat visitors almost always come during them.
April — snow plus green
April is genuinely magical. Lower slopes are green and wildflowers are beginning. Upper slopes and the gondola area still have significant snow — enough for snowball fights, photo opportunities and the white mountain views. But temperatures are milder than January, crowds are significantly lower, hotels are cheaper, and the road is open. This is my personal favourite time to take tourists to Gulmarg.
September to mid-October — golden autumn
The monsoon has passed, the air is crystal clear, and the trees around Gulmarg — particularly the chinar and pine — turn golden and amber. This is the most photogenic Gulmarg of the year, in my opinion. Temperature is ideal (8°C–16°C), crowds are lower than June, and the gondola runs smoothly. The first dusting of early snow sometimes appears in late October on the upper slopes, which adds to the views.
5. The Gondola — What Changes by Season
The Gulmarg Gondola (officially Gulmarg Ropeway) has two phases and operates very differently depending on the month:
| Season | Phase 1 (to Kongdori, 3,080m) | Phase 2 (to Afarwat, 4,200m) | Queue wait | Ticket availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| December–February | Usually open | Weather-dependent, often open | 30–90 min on peak days | Pre-book online essential |
| March–April | Open | Open (better conditions) | 15–30 min | Same-day usually possible |
| May–June | Open | Usually open | 45–180 min in June | Pre-book online strongly advised |
| July–August | Often open but may close for weather | Frequently closed for weather | Short when open | Check daily |
| September–October | Open | Usually open | 15–25 min | Same-day usually fine |
| November | May close for season maintenance | Usually closed | — | Check jkgondaropeway.com |
Gondola ticket prices (2026): Phase 1 only — approximately ₹900/person. Phase 1 + Phase 2 return — approximately ₹1,600/person. Book online at jkgondaropeway.com. Neither your taxi driver nor Holiday Formula is able to book gondola tickets — these must be purchased directly from the official website or the on-site counter.
6. Road Conditions and the Tangmarg Question
The road from Srinagar to Gulmarg goes through Tangmarg, which is 13 km below Gulmarg town. In normal conditions, your private taxi drives all the way from Srinagar to the Gulmarg market area without stopping.
In heavy winter snowfall (usually December–February), the Gulmarg administration sometimes restricts private vehicles beyond Tangmarg. In this situation:
- Your Holiday Formula taxi drops you at the Tangmarg parking area
- You hire a local 4WD snow jeep (union-operated) for the final 13 km — approximately ₹500–₹800 per jeep, shared or private
- Your taxi driver waits at Tangmarg and collects you on the return
We always check road conditions before your departure and inform you if snow jeeps will be needed. There is no extra charge from Holiday Formula for this — the snow jeep is a separate local cost.
7. What to Pack — Season by Season
Winter packing list (December–March)
Summer packing list (May–June)
8. Which Season Should You Choose?
Choose winter if you want to...
See Gulmarg buried in deep snow · Experience skiing or snowboarding in India · Show your children real Himalayan winter · Get the dramatic white-landscape photos · Have the "Kashmir in winter" experience you have seen in films and photographs. Best months: January for snow depth, March for snow + lower crowds.
Choose summer if you want to...
Walk through green alpine meadows with wildflowers · Take the gondola to Afarwat Peak for Himalayan views in clear weather · Have a comfortable, non-extreme temperature experience · Combine Gulmarg with Pahalgam and Sonamarg in a single Kashmir tour · Avoid the logistical complexity of snow gear and road closures. Best months: Late May for wildflowers, April for snow-plus-green shoulder season.
My honest recommendation after driving both seasons for years: If you have flexibility, April gives you the best of both — green lower slopes, snow on upper slopes, clear air, low crowds and no extreme cold. It is the driver's secret season. If you cannot do April, then choose based on whether you want warmth and green (May–June) or drama and snow (January–February).
